The only real competitor in terms of global mindshare is Mediawiki, and the only reason for that is of course Wikipedia and the other wiki properties run by the Wikimedia foundation. While there are many other wikis which are popular and in use (e.g., Xwiki, MoinMoin, TikiWiki, etc.), the competitors (other than Mediawiki) do not exceed half of Dokuwiki's popularity. By this I mean that Dokuwiki is the go-to wiki for most uses.

We use that to manage projects that require multiple contributors, take care of administrative tasks and. It's fairly easy to find stuff we're looking for, even if the search functions are limited to the text we write, as opposed to the documents attached to the wiki entries. It's a repository of procedures, papers, references, and other technical notes linked together roughly in a tree-like structure. We use DokuWiki, with which I am becoming familiar, for the more technical stuff. Right now, my organization uses two pieces of software to catalog a lot of our "knowledge" and work. There's no actual fight here, I'm actually just seeking some information on the differences between the two.
